ACTINV: an open and reproducible activation and nuclide-inventory solver with executable validation

Abstract

ACTINV is open-source software for constructing activation libraries from evaluated nuclear-data files and solving irradiation–decay networks by the Chebyshev rational approximation method. Each result records input hashes, approximations, missing data, and pruning bounds. Across 132 fusion-neutron-source decay-heat experiments for 73 materials, the median experiment-level geometric-mean calculation-to-experiment ratio was 1.024 with the European Activation File 2010; 47% of experiments remained within a factor of 1.3 at every measured time. Independent numerical and external-code comparisons, covariance controls, reliability tests, and a published activation-history reproduction assess numerical and interface behavior. Results support reproducible research use within explicit transport, data, and regulatory limits.

Contribution

The manuscript connects activation and nuclide-inventory calculations to deterministic processed data, recorded input identities, explicit omissions, and executable validation evidence. It reports both the principal benchmark results and their limitations; it does not present ACTINV as qualified for licensing, safety, waste-classification, or regulatory decisions.

Reproducibility

The exact ACTINV v1.0.0 release studied in the manuscript remains available through its signed GitHub release. The subsequent v1.0.1 source archive is preserved by Zenodo. The software DOI identifies the software archive, not the submitted manuscript.
